Harry Whitty is a 17 year-old singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He grew up learning the piano and singing, then picked up the trombone at age 9. He started listening to jazz at around age 13 and, after hearing multi-instrumentalists like James Morrison and Jacob Collier, was inspired to learn as many instruments as possible and picked up drums, electric bass, trumpet and euphonium at around age 15.
His songwriting is inspired by many different artists such as Oli Rockberger, Theo Katzman, Jamie Cullum and Steely Dan. His debut EP entitled ‘Trying My Best’ features 5 original songs on a variety of topics, On the EP, Harry plays all the instruments as well as performing all the vocals. Normally found hanging out at Dud’s farm in the depths of Ashdown Forest, The Breaks are a lightly-bearded, folk-tinged pop band from the darker side of Tunbridge Wells. Influenced by acts like Okkervil River, Bonnie Prince Billy, Iron & Wine and Husky, their sound is at times melancholic, occasionally menacing, and always melodic, rich and tuneful. The band includes singer-songwriter Stu Cardwell on vocals and guitars, Andy Shonfeld on bass, Al Smith on vocals, keys, guitar, mandolin and banjo, and Alex Cooper on drums and percussion.
At the age of 16 I was barely getting my head around Biology revision but super-talented singer-songwriter Niamh McSmith is already starting her assault on the music industry.
Her debut Alone Again is a plaintive yet ultimately uplifting guitar ballad about wooing back a lost lover. The video follows Niamh with tumbling pre-Raphaelite curls, denim jacket and Amy Winehouse-esque eyeliner, playing her guitar around the city and eventually befriending a hunky busker.
The sweet soundtrack to young romance, Alone Again has a chorus which will wedge firmly in your head… unlike all that stuff about enzymes and photosynthesis.Niamh has just signed to London’s Downtown Artists so expect more from her – in the meantime, Alone Again is a gorgeous introduction.
