The Varlies are a homegrown Tunbridge Wells rock band. Formed back in the
early 90s by guitarist, Kev Amos and singer, John Whitehorn, they have
been delighting audiences and listeners alike ever since with their own
blend of music and infectious live performances. The Trinity show is set
to offer a chance to catch the full band in one of their now rare
performances together where they will be performing songs from their last
four albums. With Paul May on drums and Steve Mealing on bass completing
this fantastic line up, this really be one not to be missed. Paul Dunton
Says... "The Varlies are quite simply one of the best bands I have ever
seen live. Their sublime musicianship and infectious melodies underpin
their undoubted ability to create fantastic music. This is band that takes
you on a rollercoaster of emotions! Expect everything from high energy
foot stomping rockin' tunes, funky grooves and hire wire guitar riff's to
beautifully crafted acoustic ballads. John Whitehorne is an exceptional
vocalist, with an incredible range and tone that reminds me of Neil Finn, with shades of Bon Iver's falsetto at times. The band's
live sound is hard to pigeon hole as they have their own swagger and
style, however if you said names such as The Dave Matthew's Band or a
rockier version of Crowded House that would give you an idea!"
Katy Virgoe is a songwriter that has always had a passion for performing, particularly with other musicians. Starting off as a solo artist she performed at small festivals and music events around the South East with her voice and a guitar, but since studying at BIMM she has found the joy in playing with other performers, giving her songs a new sound.
Katy’s music is now constantly changing from having an electronic feel to an open acoustic sound depending on the musicians she’s playing with.
An EP is currently in progress, but you can find Katy on Facebook.
I have been playing the piano since I was eight and started learning the guitar two years ago. As I improved I found the courage to sing, freeing my passion for writing music. I have an interest in all kinds of music which has helped develop my writing style and I find it very satisfying when I can incorporate and fuse genres together. My sound is mainly acoustic. However I am slowly learning to use a loop station to build more variety into my tracks. I feel that my style of singing is heavily influenced by rock and musical theatre. Although I don’t sound like them, Muse are a big influence in my songwriting and are a great inspiration for me. I am currently taking the Diploma Songwriting course at BIMM London followed by the Degree course in September. I have been an onstage performer since I was nine and have performed many solo and band gigs at local venues, school concerts, fairs and my local Diner. I am currently rehearsing in a band for the musical “Grease” in which I play the guitar.
Charlotte Tingley is a singer songwriter from East Sussex who writes and performs acoustic folk and pop. She spends a lot of time writing and listening to many different styles of music; influences from Adele, Taylor Swift, and many more. Guitar is her main instrument for nearly all of her performances with an occasional song or two on the Piano or ukulele. Alongside her Music studies (which she hopes to continue developing on a vocals course starting at the end of this summer), she is currently recording her EP “Reflections” which is due to be released later this year. Performing has been something she has done since she was 8 years old and only in the last 2 years started to perform her originals.
